Square bowls
These square and rectangular bowls often surprise people who assume everything turned on a lathe is round. Sometimes I add wood to the outside of the bowl blank before turning, enough so I can cut the piece into a big circle. This is done partially as a safety precaution. With four corners, a bowl turning at 500 rpm means your hand is exposed to 2,000 corners a minute flying by. It also helps with sanding, as this can be done with the lathe running. Without the added wood, all the corners have to be sanded by hand. Once the bowl is finished, the added wood is cut off.
