Let There Be Light
This sculpture is about the beginning of the world. The upright is a piece of Redwood, probably from a stump. It was an impossible piece to make anything practical from, as it is a triangle at the base, quickly turning into a wedge at the top. It sat in the entrance of KJP, ouir local wood dealer, for months -- and I walked by it dozens of times. Then, the other day, I had another look, and saw a dark and stormy sky. I though I could do something with it, so brought it home an studied it some more. It obviously needed a sun, and some rays. The sun was turned on the lathe and the rays carved. both were gold leafed. I felt that the rays had to do something, so I set the Redwood on a base made from a Black Walnut knot, carved puddles and gold leafed them. They looked empty, so I added some pearls, floating in a pool made of five-minute epoxy mixed with pearlescent paint. Somehow that completed it.
